African Daispora

The culture of Haiti is an eclectic mix of African, Taino and European elements due to the French colonization of Saint Domingue and its large and diverse enslaved African population, as is evidenced in the Haitian language, music, and religion. The majority of Haitians, 70%, are of predominantly African descent. The remaining of the population is primarily mulattoes, Europeans, Asians and Arabs. Hispanic residents in Haiti are mostly Cuban and Dominican.

In Haiti Resistance to slavery took many forms. From embracing African inspired religions and culture to economic sabotage to violent fight backs. Often these forms of resistance were interlinked. For instance, in the Antigua rebellion in 1735-6, led mainly by a group of enslaved Coromant Africans from the Gold Coast, the beginning of the act of rebellion was a mass military shield dance.

About Haiti

Haiti is bordered to the east by the Dominican Republic, which covers the rest of Hispaniola, to the south and west by the Caribbean, and to the north by the Atlantic Ocean. Haiti, whose population is almost entirely descended from African slaves, won independence from France in 1804, making it the second country in the Americas, after the United states, to free itself from colonial rule. Over the centuries, however, economic, political, and social difficulties, as well as a number of natural disasters, have beset Haiti with chronic poverty and other serious problems.
